Large Septarian half

$165.00

This is a large half of a Septarian nodule from Utah that I have fully polished. It is very UV reactive and the UV  photo shown is using long wave UV light. I slightly rounded the outside of the polished surface to help prevent chipping and to make it easy to handle. It has impressions and parts of fossils from its formation visible in several places on the outside of this nodule. This half weighs 6.9 lbs and is approximately 7” x 6-1/4” and 3” deep. It does sit well without a stand.

Septarian was formed in the ancient sea bottom during the Cretaceous period. They evolved from sea life from the time being encased in a nodule and this initiated the formation of a septarian nodule. In most of them the snail, clam or other critter is gone but the cavity remains and is filled with Aragonite (dark brown) and calcite that at times formed beautifully arranged yellow crystals on the inside of a hollow chamber.
