This nice sized Diplomystus dentatus has good bone preservation in the very dark reddish brown color, I found in the mid level split fish layer of fossil lake with the very dark/reddish brown bone preservation that’s characteristic in this layer. It’s 6” long with great detail showing in the delicate areas of the fins and tail and soft tissue preservation showing scale texture in many areas. It is on lake bottom silt stone that is approximately 7-1/2” x 4-1/4” shipping and packaging is included in the price.
The second most common of fish fossils in the Fossil Lake representing approximately 25-30% of all fossil fish found. Diplomystus is one of the only Green River Formation species to spawn mid-lake and do most of their hunting nearshore on the fry of smaller fish species. They can often reach lengths of over a foot in length, maxing out around 2 feet long.
