Large Priscacara serrata

This is a large Priscacara I dug at the Fossil Safari Quarry in Wyoming from Fossil Lake part of the Green River Formation. This specimen has very excellent soft tissue preservation showing beautiful scale details and even the soft tissue of the interior of the gills have been preserved. You can see the imprint of the massive spines from the top and bottom of this fish and the imprint of the tail. The fish itself is nearly 10” long on a thick plate of lake bottom sediment and is mounted on maple plywood for protection when displayed. The plate measures approximately 10” x 10” and is a hefty 1” thick before the plywood.

Priscacara serrata - is an extinct, genus of temperate bass that lived during the Eocene. It is an uncommon species in the Green River Formation, representing less than 1% of the total fish fossils. It is a favorite among fossil collectors, particularly those specimens with all of their impressive dorsal spines pointing upwards. It can occasionally reach sizes in excess of 16 inches in length.
